Stop Professors from Stealing Ideas from Local and International Students!
My friend was an student at ... He was a Quebecor. A professor asked him about all the aspects of his idea, then after a while returned him an slightly modified version of the same idea as HIS own idea. My friend was depressed and disappointed. He has chosen to fight back. No net result, because nobody was present during the idea exchange and was all done orally not in a written manner. It is easy to manipulate a young unexperienced passionate man/woman and dig out their ideas, specially when you have a authority, in a room where it is just you two, yourself and him/her, that are present. Student has only two choices, driven by his passion, either he/she gives his/her idea, or he/she accepts concequences like irrespectful treatment, shrinking or even stopping financial helps from the professor. I remind you that financial help come from industry or government and are primarily and principally for "ADVANCING TECHNOLOGY OR SCIENCE", and not to "SUNSCRIBE ALL RESEARCH ADVANCEMENTS IN THE NAME OF THE HEAD OF THE RESEARCH GROUP". Professors should be prevented to abuse those finaces and put the pressure on students.
Having an artile in well-known scientific magasin is what all scientists need and are passionate about. But imagine when your newly hired professor, invites ylou to her office and tells you: "hey, I need to have my name as the "author name" on an article to get my permanent position at the university. I want to put my name as the first name on the article that you wrote because after all I have corrected that!!". You, as a student with no one to back you financially in Canada, know that if you refuse she will cut your finance and you have no way to prove that it happens because you refused! simply because nobody else was there. and let's guess, even if you prove, the most that happens is that she will be ashamed by the university administration and may be more motivated to revenge you (this is the most that happened to the other professor mentioned above). No other professor is there who works on your subject and you cannot finish your program, and for sure even in this case you loose your student industrial financial help. I agreed and lost the honor, the credit and the chance to be known as the inventor of what I created.
I am a newly accepted PhD student at ... my professor asks me to meet him at his office. He asks me what I want to do for my phD. I answer bak that I have the capacity to work on his current research subjects. He looks at me ad says, you as a PhD student should know what you want to do in your PhD! (in a manner that if you dont you are not intelligent enough to be a PhD student!). Me, a young and passionate student who wants to prove himself, I tell him parts of one of my long-time idea. The professor asks more and more, as he writes down every details. At the end he tells me: "I dont have money source to support your research idea, but I can pay you to work on "supercontinuum"!!! As an immigrant who has no family here to support me during my studies, I had no choice other than choosing a research subject for which I can be paid, so I accepted. Stepping out of the office I was talking to myself "so why he asked me so much details? why he was writtig down every single details? why he didnt stop me and telling me that this subject is not among the research subjects he is currently funded for?". After a short while he managed to make me leave my PhD in a clever way!
5 years later, I started to work in a company, where the camarades of the same research group were working. Two months later, I found out some similarities between my "revealed idea" and their products, motivating me to dig in more to see if my "revealed-idea" is somehow different from hteirs or not. I digged out their patent, and to my deepest surprise, guess whose name was on the patent as co-patenter? You may have guessed right: the same professor that I started my PhD with!!! In fact he has stolen from me the idea, the honor of the innovation, and the money that I could have made with that. (I am not playing a victim, that made me strong and made me to believe more in my ideas and made me to become an entrepreneur. Now I have lots of great ideas that I am developping and working on which are very promising). Some legal mechanisms should be found to punish people like him, and prevent them to meet students in private. Maybe they should be obliged to record every single meeting with students. You may suggest other mechanisms.
