Help save the Vaquita!
The vaquita is a type of porpoise that is native to the Gulf of California, and humans are largely to blame having endangered this species to the point where complete extinction is imminent unless we immediately try to save them.
Since 1997, 80 percent of the world’s population of vaquitas have fallen victim to bycatch, as the animals are frequently caught in gillnets operated by illegal totoaba fishing operations. Vaquitas are now the rarest marine mammal on Earth.
But there is hope! Mexican and American scientists have been meeting to establish a plan to save the vaquita, as public awareness and pressure grows stronger. And actor and activist Leonardo DiCaprio been working hard to raise awareness for the vaquita and recently helped convince the Mexican government to take important steps that could make all the difference.
It’s more important than ever that we raise our voices to show Mexican and American authorities that that the public strongly supports these efforts to save the vaquita -- please sign the petition and share it with all your friends.
Without our help, the vaquita could be gone forever -- together, we can really make a difference!
